Dear Prime Minister,
You were badly briefed about Haringey prior to Parliamentary Questions on the 21st March 2018.
"The right hon. Gentleman (Jeremy Corbyn) says that his shadow Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government is supporting councils, but I wonder whether he supports these councils: Haringey, where the Labour leader was forced out.... What had these people done? They had supported building more homes, providing good local services..."

The leader of Haringey Council supports the demolition of the Northumberland Park council estate of 1100 homes in the most deprived ward in the London Borough of Haringey, which is among 5% of the most deprived wards in the UK. I live in Tottenham and attend the parish Church of that deprived ward.

Haringey Council and Lend Lease know all there is to know about the price of land, demolition and building, but know nothing whatsoever about the value of a deprived community.

There was no attempt at all to relieve their deprivation and no health impact assessment of the effect of forced migration on deprived individuals and families. A deprived community was going to be demolished along with their homes. The deprivation was to be spread to other wards or even other councils.
The council’s website will tell you that the residents of the ward experience;

1.10-12% low birthweight;. the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition will tell you;

  • 10-12% is at same level as emerging economies.
  • mothers need a healthy diet before they conceive and
  • while they are pregnant poor maternal nutrition and low birth-weight carry the risk of permanent, lifelong brain disorder. Residents o

2. Northumberland Park die on average 7 years younger than in the more prosperous wards in the west of the borough.

3. They are mostly unemployed or in low paid work.

On top of all that they suffer under the immorality of the State assuming every unemployed person in the UK is a crook. Why do we assume that others will steal from the state and then impose on the overwhelmingly large and innocent majority the most demanding active labour-market policy in Europe?
At the same time we barely question the income that is parked offshore, tax-free, and the vast, unearned increases in private wealth accumulated as the value of UK land has soared since 1979.

Yours sincerely,

Paul Nicolson
