TELLING THE TRUTH TO WORLD ABOUT INJUSTICE IN THE UK
THE SOCIAL CLEANSING OF THE OVERALL BENEFIT CAP OF £500

The BBC Inside Out London is making film to illustrate the impact of the £500 overall benefit cap (OBC) on families in London and in the towns and cities to which they have been evicted. He is interested in talking to;

  • families currently living in London who are experiencing the insecurity of tenure imposed by the OBC, receiving discretionary housing payments and will have or already do have rent arrears, and are under threat of eviction due to the OBC.
  • families who have been moved by a local authority from one London borough to another due to the OBC,
  • families who have been moved by a local authority to any town or city out of London because of the OBC.

If you know of any families who would be willing to tell their stories to illustrate the injustice of the £500 cap then please email him with the contact details Tom Kavanagh <tom.kavanagh1@bbc.co.uk>.

My advice is that the BBC should guarantee the anonymity of any family that asks for it and that their faces should not be shown. Of course any family who wants to tell their story without anonymity should do so. If they go public then they should be given all the emotional and practical support possible because of the persistent demonising of benefit claimants who put their heads above the battlements.

I have given Tom Kavanagh the link to the Pro-Housing Alliance website with a report on the housing crisis in London. He had already found the link to the Haringey Solidarity Group campaign against this social cleansing with the facts sheet about the OBC.
